J. M. Barrie, a distinguished writer and playwright, was born in Scotland in 1860. The first literary appearance of his most famous hero, Peter Pan, was in The Little White Bird. The book was published in 1902 and contained six chapters about Peter that captured the imagination of readers, earning him a permanent place in children's mythology.
Later, these same chapters were extracted and published in 1906 under the title Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens along with the wonderful illustrations by Arthur Rackham. Barrie wrote six novellas and over forty plays, but Peter Pan is the only children's book, the most timeless and famous of all his works. The Times of London stated that it is the most enchanting book ever written.
Before flying away to Neverland, a little boy lives in the heart of London with his friends the birds and fairies. He discovers the magic of everyday existence among the trees and flowers of Kensington Gardens. It is also the place where J. M. Barrie met the children who inspired his classic stories.
What boy or man hasn’t admired and envied Peter Pan, The Boy Who Refused to Grow Up? Inside every man, there is a Peter Pan, but without the imagination, dreams, and hopes of a child, he risks remaining forever a lost boy.
Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the most famous illustrators of the Victorian Golden Age of Illustration. Among his inspired illustrations are The Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, featuring the wonderful black-and-white silhouettes, a style that Rackham first used in these fairy tales and continued throughout his later work.
The literary excellence of the text, enriched with the dreamlike elements that Rackham captured so brilliantly, places Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens among the classic masterpieces of world literature.
