This collective volume contains contributions concerning: the establishment of March 25 as a day of National Celebration, the reactions and how the Ottomans received and interpreted the national liberation struggle of the Greeks, the dialogue between Greek and European scholarship in the 18th and 19th centuries regarding the formation of the Greek national narrative, the handling of poverty and destitution after the Revolution, the transition from Ottoman health governance to Greek public health.
It also engages the authors with: the vital issue of banditry during the early years of the Greek state, the formation of the Greek army, the issue of the fighters of '21 after the revolution, the matter of the Peloponnesian notables before and during the Revolution, the question of klephts in the declining 18th century and the rising 19th century, as well as aspects of "anti-Westernism," representations of foreigners, suspicion towards foreign admiration, and criticism of Francophilia.
Those interested will also find useful information about the Great Idea as the driving force behind the major choices of the Greek state after the Revolution, the "economics of the Struggle" and their connection with state formation and operation, the critical issues faced by the first Ottoonic governments in order to build internal and external state sovereignty, as well as a diagram of Greek comedy in the 19th century.
Finally, fruitful questions are raised regarding the relationship between History and Literature and a comprehensive picture is presented of the 1821 revolution in Cyprus and the process by which pre-revolutionary Greek society begins the liberation struggle in 1821.
