The period of war and occupation, especially for the city of Piraeus, was particularly painful, as dramatic events unfolded over its forty-eight-month duration. Piraeus shared the same fate as a border town, which, due to its geographical proximity to the enemy, was completely destroyed by it! What must the first moments, the first days of a people who went to sleep carefree one night and woke up the next in a state of war have been like? What was the daily life like for those who were not conscripted but found themselves facing a mountain of issues that needed to be resolved? You see, from October '40 onwards, not only did the appearance of the city change, but the habits of the people of Piraeus changed as well. Everything changed. This is a record that aims not to highlight the struggle of the war front, but the struggle of the daily life of a people fighting for their honor and survival. Germans, Italians, English, and Americans, each for different reasons and purposes, became creators of disaster for the city and its inhabitants because it was a port. And as a port, it had to be destroyed! And these same inhabitants were called upon post-war to pay, among the many contributions in human souls and material losses, the small fee (ten cents) as a mandatory contribution on the bus tickets of Piraeus, to rebuild the Metropolitan Church of the city, the Holy Trinity, which had collapsed into ruins, like the entire city of Piraeus. This is the Piraeus we will describe, which was bombarded from the first day of the war to the last. For the Piraeus of the bomb victims, the Piraeus of hunger, the sidewalks, the fear, the blockades, the little Gavroches. The memories of the war and occupation of a city must always be kept alive because a city dies when its memories are lost first.
