A history book, but also a book about the era of "post-truth"; not just an exhibition of monsters and fantasies but, as Evans says, "a book for our troubled times." The idea that nothing is accidental in history, that everything that happens is the result of machinations woven in the background by malevolent forces, is as old as history itself. However, conspiracy theories, which go hand in hand with paranoia, are spreading more and more in the 21st century. And nowhere are they more evident than in the revisionist versions of the history of the Third Reich. Theories long discredited have gained new life thanks to supposedly new evidence and approaches, the multiplying power of social media, and the diminished influence of traditional sources of authoritative knowledge.
