The Aga of Lykovrisi sits on his balcony overlooking the village square, smoking his pipe and drinking raki. A light drizzle falls softly, tenderly, and on his thick, curled mustache, freshly painted with food coloring, sparkle a few drops; and the Aga, tipsy from the raki, licks them off to cool down.
To his right stands the seizer, a towering wild Oriental, cross-eyed and ugly, with his trumpet; to his left sits cross-legged, on a velvet cushion, a beautiful chubby Turkish girl, who lights his pipe from time to time and continuously fills his cup with raki.
The Aga squints his drugged eyes and enjoys the upper world; God has done everything well, he thinks, this world is a successful thing, it lacks nothing: if you are hungry, there is bread and stewed meat and pilaf with cinnamon; if you are thirsty, there is the immortal water, the raki; if you are sleepy, God has made sleep, one and one for drowsiness.
