The play "Purgatorio" by Ariel Dorfman (Medea in Purgatory) is an extension of the myth of Medea and Jason, a contemporary interpretation of Euripides' Medea, set in a timeless and placeless realm that resembles something between a lunatic asylum and a "Dantean" purgatory.
The goal of the two unique characters in the play is to heal and free one another through repentance and acceptance of their mistakes, using the vehicle of revisiting the past and recalling painful memories.
However, these two souls, Jason and Medea, have undergone a universal transformation, one as the moral author and the other as the perpetrator of heinous acts, who through a fluctuating role play between the healer and the healed, the offender and the victim, become emotionally involved, are hurt, and are exhausted, all under the watchful eye of some high-ranking individuals who monitor them through video cameras. In the end, they discover that they will be alone, but forever beside each other, waiting for salvation indefinitely.
