The work of Ernst Ziller represents a critical point in the architectural history of Greece. During the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, the architect from Saxony, who served as an apprentice under Theophilus Hansen and decided to dedicate his life to Greece, created buildings that were as numerous as they were unique. These buildings, conceived in the spirit of Neoclassicism and Eclecticism, left their mark on Athens and other Greek cities.
The current volume presents fifty works by Ziller. Covering a wide variety of buildings, from mansions and villas to shops, markets, and banks, from schools to monuments and churches, it aims to make them known to a broader audience. The accompanying titles include brief descriptions and comments on the buildings and attempt to convey the social context in which they were designed and constructed, as well as their main architectural features.
