An old document, which ends up in the hands of Professor Lindenbrock, informs him that one can reach the center of the Earth by descending into the crater of the Icelandic volcano Snæfells.

He then decides to travel to Iceland, bringing along his nephew, Axel. Guided by the Icelandic hunter Hans, the uncle and nephew enter the mysterious volcano.
