In 425 B.C., while the Peloponnesian War was in its seventh year, the Athenians, led by Cleon, achieved an unexpected victory at Pylos. Cleon became immensely powerful and made any discussion for negotiations with the Spartans impossible. Aristophanes, opposed to Cleon's politics, wrote "The Knights". This comedy ridicules Cleon with accusations. It was performed at the Lenaea in 425 B.C. and won the first prize, demonstrating the political maturity of the people and the tolerance of Athenian democracy towards free expression of opinions.
