In 425 B.C., while the Peloponnesian War was in its seventh year, the Athenians, led by Cleon, achieved an unexpected victory at Pylos. Cleon became immensely powerful and made any discussion for negotiations with the Spartans impossible. Aristophanes, opposed to Cleon's politics, wrote "The Knights".
