The first three volumes of Gibbon's "Decline and Fall" (of the Western Empire) were published by Everyman in 1993. Volumes 4-6 complete the series, which is available for the first time in many years. This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of Gibbon's death, an event that has been extensively covered in the press, yet even after two hundred years, his book remains an authoritative work in Roman history. Furthermore, it is still highly readable: intelligent, elegant, and captivating, filled with the personality of the author. Everyman's six-volume edition - the only complete one available - prints the entire text of the book with all of Gibbon's notes, later commentaries, maps, tables, descriptive contents lists, indexes, appendices, and two excellent essays about the author and his work by Hugh Trevor-Roper.
