It's a variable early summer day, and there is unusual activity at Pointz Hall, a country house in a remote village in the heart of England. The local community is on alert, trying to put the final touches on the preparations for the annual pageant, which is set to take place that evening. Among those present are Mr. Oliver, the owner of the house, the playful Mrs. Manresa and her friend William Dodge, who is rumored to be homosexual, the troubled married couple, Giles and Isa, as well as the highly eccentric Miss La Trobe, the author of the pageant – an ambitious journey through the past and English literature.

Highly symbolic and dealing with many of the themes that were most beloved by Virginia Woolf, such as the individual's situation in the stream of history, sexual ambiguity, and the tension between life and art, Between the Acts was the author's final novel, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the direction her literature might have taken.
