Description

Description

The Case Study House program (1945–1966) was a unique event in the history of American architecture. Sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, the program aimed to respond to the postwar building boom with original modern homes that could be easily reproduced and accessible to the average American family. Focused in the Los Angeles area, the Case Study Houses included 36 house models that were commissioned from prominent architects of the era such as Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, Craig Ellwood, Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, Eero Saarinen, A. Quincy Jones, and Ralph Rapson. Their criteria included the use, as much as possible, of techniques and materials derived from the war and suitable for expressing human life in the modern world. The program's results would revolutionize the concept of the modern home and influence not only the United States but also the world. This compact guide includes all the Case Study Houses with over 150 photographs and designs, as well as a map showing the locations of all the sites, including those that no longer exist.
