When I came to, the sun was high and I was under the bed. I lifted myself up and realized I could stand. A big cut under my chin. My hand joints were injured. I had experienced worse headaches after a hangover. I had woken up in even worse places. In some detention center, say? Probably. I looked around. It was indeed true. Everything was broken and dirty and shattered, scattered everywhere – lamps, chairs, wardrobe, bed, ashtrays – there was blood everywhere, nothing was in its place, everything was destroyed and beyond repair. I drank some water and then went to the dresser. Everything was there, tens, twenties, fifties, the money I used to throw into the drawer every time I got up to pee while we were playing cards, and I remembered that the fight had started over the MONEY. I gathered all the banknotes, put them in my wallet, opened the paper suitcase on the tilted bed and began putting in my few rags: cheap shirts, old shoes with holey soles, hard and dirty socks, baggy pants with cuffs ready to unravel, a short story about someone who had stuck clamshells at the San Francisco Opera, and a shabby dictionary bought at one of the convenience stores of the Thrifty chain – "palingenesis: the recapitulation of ancestral stages in the evolution of life".
