On 16 December 1944, Hitler launched his "last gamble" in the snowy forests and gorges of the Ardennes. He believed he could split the Allies by driving on Antwerp and force the Canadians and the British out of the war. Despite the doubts of his generals, younger officers and non-commissioned officers hoped to save their homes and families from the vengeful Red Army approaching from the east. Many were excited by the prospect of turning the tide. The Ardennes offensive, with over a million men involved, became the largest battle of the war in Western Europe.
The surprised American soldiers found themselves fighting two panzer armies. Belgian civilians fled, justifiably fearing German retribution. Panic even spread in Paris. While many American soldiers fled or surrendered, others heroically held on, creating blockades that slowed the German advance. The harsh winter conditions and savagery of the battle became comparable to those on the Eastern Front. After massacres by the Waffen-SS, even American generals approved when their men shot surrendered Germans. The Ardennes was the battle that finally broke the Wehrmacht’s back.
