Epistolary, confessional, and didactic, the book is the fictional autobiography of the titular character, a castaway who spent twenty-eight years on a remote tropical island. Robinson Crusoe was first published in 1719. It is considered the first English novel and one of the most important books of all time. Until the end of the 19th century, no book in the history of Western literature had more editions, variations, and translations than this one. It was warmly received by the literary world. To this day, it remains one of the most published books in history. Robinson Crusoe marked the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. Its success led to many imitators, making novels about castaways quite popular in Europe during the 18th and early 19th centuries. It was futile to sit idly and wish for what I could not have, and this emergency awakened in me the disposition for careful effort. We had several spare yards, two or three large wooden masts, and one or two spare spars, so I decided to get to work and threw into the sea as many as I could manage due to their weight, tying each with a rope to prevent them from drifting away. [...] The hope of supplying myself with necessities gave me the courage to toil harder than I would have otherwise. Excerpt from the book
