The prevailing opinion is that PASOK collapsed because it "put the country into memoranda." Thus, it found itself in opposition to its own base—the voters from the most vulnerable social strata—who bore the greatest burden of the crisis. These voters mainly migrated to SYRIZA and proved to be more susceptible to populism. For members and officials of PASOK, this represents a kind of historical injustice. According to their version, their party sacrificed itself to save Greece.
They paid for the sins of others, especially the Karamanlis government. Both versions contain elements of truth. However, a big question remains. Both New Democracy and SYRIZA signed memoranda. Both parties implemented austerity policies, each doing its own "u-turn." Another political term we have inherited in international literature.
