At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Austrian Sigmund Freud, a physiologist and psychiatrist, laid the foundations of psychoanalysis as a therapeutic method through his studies and revolutionized the way modern man perceives concepts such as consciousness and sexuality.

In the work The Future of an Illusion (Die Zukunft einer Illusion), written in 1927, Freud offers his own interpretation of the psychological origins of religious beliefs, presenting religious upbringing as a hindering factor in the progress of human civilization.
