Description & Specifications

Few works of classical literature have had such a significant influence not only on subsequent literary production but also on scientific fields outside of classical philology as Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.

This is a major tragedy (1530 lines), a mature fruit of Sophocles' thought, which raises a series of fundamental philosophical, religious, anthropological, psychological, and other issues that have occupied and continue to occupy scholars for centuries.

This monograph, the result of the authors' long engagement with tragedy and especially with Sophoclean drama, is addressed both to specialists and to the general public.

Its four main objectives are: a) to offer a comprehensive interpretation of the tragedy, placing it within its broader historical, literary, and philosophical contexts; b) to attempt to provide answers to specific research questions, contributing productively to the scientific dialogue related to the tragedy; c) to introduce a wider audience to this powerful work of Athenian thought from the late fifth century BC; and d) to provide students of philology and classical studies at our universities with a dynamic scientific analytical tool for this drama, through which the student community will have the opportunity to learn about the most important findings of current research and contemporary scholarly trends, while also reflecting on the scientific questions regarding Oedipus Rex that still require answers.
