What is the history of art? Is it what Pliny narrates, what Vasari includes in his 'Lives', or perhaps the 'History of Ancient Art', the swan song of Winkelmann? It is certain that the writings of all these authors are connected both to art and to its history.
However, the subject of the present book is different. It concerns how the history of art is constituted as a 'science', specifically how it defines its field of study, classifies its vast material, and develops its own theoretical discourse. The author's position is that this process must necessarily be linked to the emergence of the nation-state: The science of art history has been from the beginning, particularly in the German-speaking world, a bearer of the formation of the very national 'ideology' through the duality of museum-university.
Thus, the activities of the historians of the Berlin School are described within the pages of the book, the vision of the young romantics (including Goethe) regarding the 'northern' Middle Ages, the projection of the Italian Renaissance by Jakob Burckhardt, the empirical method of Giovanni Morelli, the successes and failures of experts, and the controversial career of Bernard Berenson.
The author places particular emphasis on the labyrinthine work of Alois Riegl and other representatives of the Vienna School, as their dispute regarding 'Late Antiquity' with the 'Attila of art history' Józef Strzygowski defined the discussion on the origins of modern European culture itself.
The cycle closes with the presentation of the 'structural' theory of the National Socialist Hans Sedlmayr, where through the exemplary analysis of the painting of Pieter Bruegel, the intense political and social tensions of the interwar period are highlighted. This book thus illuminates all significant aspects of the process of the birth of this new science that is being constituted at the dawn of modernity against the tumultuous horizon of European history.
