The visionary perception of Sikelianos for a new world order based on ancient and timeless spiritual principles influenced his entire work as a poet, playwright, and essayist. Like any true visionary, he had specific and practical suggestions, which he articulated in his writings, regarding how his vision could be realized.
This volume includes a selection of these writings, translated into English for the first time. His vision arose as a response and solution to the social and political problems of humanity in the turbulent times in which he lived. He saw behind the historical conflicts an urgent need for a global spiritual renaissance of humanity, and he named this goal the "Delphic Effort".
Sikelianos believed that Delphi provided the perfect center for a spiritual alliance of peoples and like-minded individuals. It was a spiritual center for time immemorial, considered the center of the ancient world, and had been the meeting point for the Amphictyony, an alliance of city-states, making it an obvious choice for the new global spiritual amphictyony he envisioned. This is why he organized famous celebrations in Delphi in 1927 and 1930, the real purpose of which was, however, to gather spiritual envoys from all nations and to highlight the deeper spiritual motivations behind the Delphic Effort.
These writings of Sikelianos and his vision as embodied in the Delphic Effort remain just as relevant today. Never has there been a greater need for a Global Union of Nations founded on spirituality, in which every nation and every person, guided by an enlightened consciousness, will play a necessary role.
