We often say that marriage kills love. But could it be that love ultimately proves to be the enemy of marriage?

The triumph of marrying for love in our time has come to heal the ills of the classic institution of marriage: equality between partners and the prioritization of emotion over obligation.

Yet, for the past forty years, marriage seems to be losing its prestige, divorces are multiplying, families are recomposing or not composing at all: the number of single-parent families has reached unprecedented levels, as has the number of individuals living outside and far from any form of marriage.

How can a voluntary, "free" institution, which is still extremely resilient despite the above, be a source of unhappiness? Was the old good days "better" when people did not marry for love but for social obligation and remained married "silently suffering"?
