Completed just two months before the author's murder in 1936, the work "The House of Bernarda Alba" is now acknowledged as Lorca's great masterpiece on love and hate. Five daughters live together in a house with a tyrannical mother. When the father of all but the eldest daughter dies, a cynical marriage proposal is made, which will have tragic consequences for the entire family. Lorca's stunningly contemporary play, translated into English by David Hare, highlights both the political allegory of oppression and the dramatic family story with equal power. The play premiered at the National Theatre in London in March 2005.
