Description & Specifications

This collection is the first of three volumes of the Complete Works dedicated to the central theme of the life and work of Rosa Luxemburg: the revolution. It spans from 1897 to the end of 1905 and contains speeches, articles, and essays on strikes, protests, and political debates that culminated in the 1905 Russian Revolution—one of the most significant social upheavals of the modern era. Luxemburg's almost daily reports and articles during 1905 about the unfolding revolution (which occupy the main bulk of this volume) cast new light on issues such as the relationship between spontaneous action and organization, the role of national minorities in social revolution, and the inseparable connection between the struggle for socialism and revolutionary democracy. We witness Luxemburg's effort to respond to the impulses, challenges, and ideas emerging from a vibrant revolutionary process, which in turn becomes the source of many of her subsequent political theories—such as her writings on mass strikes, her intense internationalism, and her insistence that the revolutionary struggle must never stray from the need to transform the human personality. Almost all of these writings appear for the first time in English (translated from German and Polish), and many have recently been recognized as works by Luxemburg.
