Description

Description

The Politics is the top work of political philosophy by Aristotle that introduced us to the idea that "man is a political animal", while making the distinction of the three powers (legislative, executive, and judicial).

Many consider the Politics to be a natural continuation of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Indeed, Aristotle concludes in the Nicomachean Ethics that the study of individual ethics should be followed by the study of politics, that is, everything concerning the city, the social organization of individuals.

Aristotle approaches politics theoretically starting from the available historical evidence. He refers to the smallest form of social organization, the household, and the roles that its members have (or should have). He studies the known constitutions of his time, the differences and wars between city-states, as well as the laws and legislators of the city-states (Athens, Sparta, Crete, Carthage), which he compares by studying their advantages and disadvantages.

Furthermore, Aristotle compares the ideal city as defined by other philosophers (Plato, as well as Phaleas of Chalcedon, Hippodamus of Miletus).

Thus, Aristotle defines the concepts of the City and the Citizen, classifies the constitutions and their deviations, proposes the characteristics that the best constitution should have, records the pathologies of constitutions, and explains why there are conflicts and revolutions.

Finally, Aristotle explores the type of education that young people should receive in order to implement the best constitution.

The Politics consists of 8 books, which are included in three volumes.

Each volume includes the ancient original text, translation into modern Greek, and introduction/commentary.
