Description

What is it that defines us? Why do we live one life and not another? Asle, an elderly painter and widower living alone on the southwestern coast of Norway, reflects on his life. His only friends are his neighbor, Asleik, a traditional fisherman-farmer, and Beyer, a gallery owner who lives in the city. There, in Bjorgvin, another Asle lives, also a painter but alone and consumed by alcohol. Asle and Asle are doppelgängers – two versions of the same person, two versions of the same life, both grappling with existential questions about death, love, light and shadow, faith and despair. Septology is a transcendent exploration of the human condition by Jon Fosse, the 2023 Nobel Prize for Literature laureate, and a radically different reading experience - haunting, hypnotic and utterly unique.
