What is it that defines us? Why do we live one life and not another? Asle, an elderly painter and widower living alone on the southwestern coast of Norway, reflects on his life. His only friends are his neighbor, Asleik, a traditional fisherman-farmer, and Beyer, a gallery owner who lives in the city.
