It protects the lens from dirt, scratches, fingerprints, and accidental damage. It is made from reinforced Japanese AGC optical glass and features 28 layers of multilayer coating.

Light transmission is 99.6%, and the anti-reflective coating helps preserve natural colors. The slim aluminum alloy frame is 3.3 mm thick, and double-sided polishing helps limit vignetting, even with telephoto and ultra-wide-angle lenses.
