Doris Lessing’s love affair with cats began at an early age when she was enchanted by the semi-wild creatures on the African farm where she grew up. Her fascination remained unchanged by the beautiful domesticated animals that shared her apartments and life in London and evolved into a true love for El Magnifico, the awkwardly lovable cat that, in the last years of her life, suffered the great humiliation of becoming a three-legged animal.
