The Pioneer A-40AE integrated amplifier is a stereo amplifier featuring Direct Energy design and separate power supply circuits for the power amplifier, preamplifier and controls. Direct mode bypasses all circuits except the volume control, while Power Amp Direct mode allows the power amplifier to be used directly. It features an MM phono input and a Wolfson 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converter.

Special electrolytic capacitors were developed in collaboration with ELNA, while the Anti-Standing Wave insulators are designed without parallel interior surfaces to prevent cavity resonance. The amplifier has a 1.6 mm-thick steel chassis, an aluminium front panel and an aluminium volume knob.
