The German Fallschirmjäger were the first paratroopers in the world to be used in large numbers during the war that broke out in 1939. They conducted bold assaults on strategic targets, such as the fortress of Eben Emael, allowing subsequent Panzer forces to capture Europe.

Their greatest achievement as paratroopers was the fierce battles they fought during the capture of Crete in 1941, facing numerous British and Allied forces. This decisive victory meant they were not used en masse again.

Small units continued to operate with gliders and parachutes, rescuing Italian leader Mussolini and attacking behind American lines in the Ardennes. Their most brilliant moment was undoubtedly the fierce fighting in the capture of the Monastery of Monte Cassino for months, under the pressure of overwhelming forces, earning the nickname "Green Devils." The German paratroopers were regarded as perhaps the toughest in a tough army.
