The Long Day's Journey into Night is the story of a disastrous day in the Tyrone family, each member of which has their own emotional and psychological stress to endure, influenced by factors of morphine addiction and alcoholism.
It depicts the downward spiral of the four members, who are unable to face reality with their seemingly endless reservoir of shattered dreams, addiction and substance abuse, depression, illness, disappointment, unfulfilled life ambitions, the collapse of high expectations, poor choices, and their haunted past.
This work is a strictly autobiographical drama, with many striking similarities to the life of Eugene O'Neill; it is a bleak journey through the writer's life, as he adds and mixes his personal and family life into it.
O'Neill strips bare his soul here and essentially tells the world what it was like to grow up in a home like his. Therefore, it is not surprising that he referred to it as "a play of old sorrow, written with tears and blood."
