The second book by British military, politician, and intellectual C. M. Woodhouse (1917-2001), titled "Eis Oionos," was published only once in English, in 1950, and included twelve ethnographic stories of his adventures in Greece.
However, as it turned out, there were not twelve stories, since two more were discovered later, which Greek readers have the opportunity to read for the first time in the appendix of this edition. Thus, fourteen ethnographic stories, written with abundant British wit, straddling the line between fiction and history.
These stories mainly take place in the mountains of Roumeli, before and after the historic sabotage at Gorgopotamos, undeniably the pinnacle moment of united National Resistance. Stories that bear witness to the truth of the Greek people, the suffering they endured, as well as the admirable selflessness and ingenuity they displayed during the Occupation.
Woodhouse offers us a delightful yet coded historical document, presenting a vivid and complex social universe, with elements of both comedy and drama.
He describes a people who are trying in every way to survive; who treat the representatives of the Great Powers with respect; who bravely teeter between life and death, amidst political stakes they often do not understand; a people who unite under a strong common denominator: "Heis oionos aristos amynesthai peri patris."
