Description

In this book, Yanis Varoufakis analyzes, in the form of a long letter to his father, how capitalism was murdered by something much worse that took its place. Capitalism was killed by the capital itself! Not the traditional capital (industrial machines, computers, etc.), but a mutation of capital: machines networked through the "cloud computing" (a kind of "cloud-capital") that run algorithms designed to shape our consumer desires and fulfill them instantly, thus bypassing the two pillars of capitalism: Market and Profit.

By entering websites like Amazon, we exit the markets and enter transaction platforms that resemble digital feudalities (or cloud-feudalities) whose owners, the new ruling class, charge producers gigantic rents to give them access to us. As for us, with every click and everything we "upload," we offer them free labor, like serfs during feudal times. And we offer it enthusiastically! This is not capitalism. Welcome to tech-feudalism!

The impact of tech-feudalism is felt everywhere. It is the tombstone of both social democracy and liberalism. It exacerbates the economic crisis. It makes it impossible to address the climate crisis. It fuels the New Cold War between the US and China.

Borrowing from the poetry of Hesiod and Homer, as well as from Hollywood's Batman or Mad Men, Varoufakis analyzes how cloud-capital managed to enslave our minds and elevate its exploitative power domestically and internationally – but also how we can liberate ourselves from its tech-feudalism.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT "TALKING TO MY FATHER: AN INTRODUCTION TO TECH-FEUDALISM":

"An insightful analysis." The Guardian

"Gripping... an ambitious thinker and restless writer... Varoufakis is right that we are at the mercy of digital applications, which hold our personal data hostage and do not allow us to switch to a 'competitive cloud-feudalism'." The Times

"A book for anyone who wants to understand the chaos we are in – and since we are all in this chaos, a book for everyone." Slavoj Žižek

"What if capitalism was dying without anyone noticing - not even the capitalists? Digital platforms appropriated capitalism and imposed something much worse. This book is an urgent call to reclaim control of our lives in the digital world." Cory Doctorow

"It will undoubtedly be a cornerstone in discussions about the future of the global economy." Nick Srnicek, one of the authors of Inventing the Future

"Incredible. A dark, terrifying, compelling song for our time. 100 out of 100." Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting

"With exceptional narration, Varoufakis shows how capitalism devoured its own flesh." Brett Scott, author of Cloudmoney

"One thing is certain - we have no hope of improving things if we do not fully understand the deadlock we are in. This book is a welcome contribution in that direction." The Conversation
