It wasn't just the consequences of the Peloponnesian War, which had already troubled it for 17 years — and its opponents as well — but also the warlike attitude of the leaders, which diminished hopes for peace! Aristophanes, disheartened by all this, wrote "The Birds" during that period, a work that is entirely utopian, as it depicts its heroes seeking the ideal city in the sky, close to the birds, since life on their earthly homeland had become unbearable! The play was performed at the City Dionysia and won second place in the theatrical competitions!
