Description

The tragic wildfires in Greece during the summer of 2023, as well as in many other countries around the world, once again highlighted the state of emergency that the planet is facing due to the climate crisis.

The great energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine has revealed, among other things, the many weaknesses in European energy strategy.

The major dilemmas for global economies that are replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources, the new geopolitical balances with China's significant role in the green transition, waste management, the importance of forests in ecological balance, water pollution, the fashion industry's contribution to emissions, the role of smart digital agriculture, modern transportation, the role of industry, and the necessary changes in the daily behavior of all of us are analyzed in a simple and, most importantly, constructive way through the conversation between Giannis Maniatis and Makis Provatas.

A significant part of the book is dedicated to Greek conditions and priorities. Energy democracy, energy poverty, energy saving, energy communities, national hydrocarbon reserves, the country's major geopolitical initiatives to transform it into an energy hub: a holistic web of interdependent problems is analyzed in detail and, importantly, a series of well-founded solutions are proposed for the present and the future of the country, within the complex economic and international environment that is being shaped daily.

“The breadth of the economic, social, and environmental impacts of the climate crisis and the policies of both the EU and the G20 raise concerns about where we are headed: Quo vadimus? I am sure that Giannis Maniatis’ thoughts will open new horizons for readers, offering everyday topics along with reflections on the future, from an exceptional scientist and politician, with concentrated experience, social sensitivity, innovative thinking and action, and simple language.” Christos S. Zerefos
