Description

As the Pargiters, a middle-class English family, move from the oppressive confines of the Victorian home of the 1880s to the "present day" of the 1930s, they are bombarded by the pressures of war, the social constraints of the patriarchal system, capitalism and Empire, as well as the rise of Fascism. Facing a painful struggle between utopian hope and bleak despair, the novel serves as a fierce condemnation of Virginia Woolf's society, while its bitter sadness is alleviated by the desire for a better life, where "freedom and justice" could become reality.

This is Virginia Woolf's longest novel and what she considered the most difficult to write. It was the most popular of all her works during her lifetime and now can be revisited as the most provocatively political, even revolutionary, of all her books.
