Description

When Mabel Waring removes her cloak and enters Clarissa Dalloway's drawing room, she immediately realizes that something is wrong: her pale-yellow silk dress, made especially for the occasion, seems outdated, ugly, and out of place. Everyone seems to look at her with disappointment or mock her appearance. Overwhelmed by insecurity, Mabel is engulfed by a feeling of self-hatred and feels an utter distaste for the social world she tries so hard to impress.

Written in 1924 and possibly intended for inclusion in Mrs Dalloway, a book Woolf was working on at the time, The New Dress is accompanied by most of the stories she published during her lifetime, as well as six pieces published posthumously that share the same setting and some characters from her acclaimed novel. Together, they reveal the author as one of the finest practitioners in the field of short literature.
