Virginia Woolf's Orlando is described as 'the longest and most charming love letter in literature', playfully constructing the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf's close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West. Spanning three centuries, the novel opens with Orlando, a young nobleman in Elizabeth's England, awaiting a visit from the Queen while tracing his experiences with first love amidst the backdrop of England under James I, caught in the embrace of the Great Frost.

At the midpoint of the novel, Orlando, now an ambassador in Constantinople, awakens to find that he has become a woman. This shift allows the novel to explore themes of farce and irony while considering the roles of women in the 18th and 19th centuries.

As the novel concludes in 1928, a year significant for women's suffrage, Orlando, now a wife and mother, stands at the brink of a future filled with new hope and promise for women.
