The next book in this series examines the history of all Americans as well as America. It refers to environmental history and its connection to economic history, America's political formation, and its place in the world, from the colony to the post-Cold War era.
Black analyzes America's environmental history and its connection to economic history, including deforestation, the spread of agriculture, mineral mining, industrialization, urbanization, and the growing concerns about the climate crisis.
It explores the political formation of America: the indigenous states, the free European and unfree African colonies, the creation of an American State and its successes and failures from 1783 to 1861, the Civil War, democracy, and the rise of the federal government from the 1930s and the civil rights movement from the 1950s onwards.
The book examines America in the world: as a pre-colonial and colonized space, as an independent power, and as an emerging international power, the duration of the Cold War, and the USA as a unique superpower in the post-Cold War world.
These central themes are analyzed chronologically for ease of understanding, starting from the geological creation of North America, human settlement, and Native American cultures until 1500. It follows the arrival of Europeans and enslaved Africans until 1770, as well as the conflicts of the colonists with Native Americans and among European powers.
The section covering the years 1848 to 1880 examines the Civil War between North and South, reconstruction, and the creation of a new society. From 1880 to 1920, the United States became an industrial power and international player, as well as a colonial power - the Philippines, Hawaii, Puerto Rico - participating in World War I.
The fluctuations of the period between the two world wars, 1921 to 1945, include the Roaring Twenties, the growth of Hollywood, the Prohibition Era, jazz, the Great Depression, and the New Deal, as well as World War II. The period from 1945 to 1968 is characterized by the American Age, full of confidence and success as the world's leading power, but also by the ongoing struggle for civil rights.
The subsequent years up to 1992 bring crisis and recovery: Watergate, the Reagan years, and the USA as the world's only superpower. Black, bringing the book to the present day, examines factors dividing American society and economy, although it remains a country of immense energy.
