His father, a wanted klepht chieftain, after a clash with a Turkish force, is forced to take him with him and flee far from their homeland, wandering in the mountains. There, they fall into a trap and are captured. The child witnesses the execution of his father, while he himself is dragged into the slave market.
Fate delivers him into the hands of a Greek lord, and his life changes forever. From Xiromero, Litohoro, Rapsani, and Vraniana, to the Athoniada Academy, Venice, Vienna, and Leipzig, Christodoulos will evolve into a prominent teacher of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. He will confront the regime of theocracy, be persecuted, and excommunicated.
A novel about the quest for individual freedom and simultaneously a human tragedy, during a time when the Romios struggled under the weight of the Ottoman yoke, while in Europe the world began to transform.
