The palm of the hand touches the Ottoman vastness, Thessaloniki, Constantinople, and Handak, the borders of Europe. Matthias Almosino, a crypto-Jew in Basel, Switzerland, crosses from a tender age the Republica Christiana, the Christian realm, orphaned in a Dickensian manner and trapped in the theocratic oppression of his time.
He builds his coming of age through adventures, as he changes masks of religious and ethnic identity, torn almost until the end by the great stakes inaugurated by his century: the birth of scientific discourse and the ignition of rationalism against the nostalgia for the miraculous and the most extreme messianic expectations.
Spinoza faces the most intolerant conflicts, Descartes and Shabbetai Zvi, the universe through the eyes of new science as a well-tuned machine and in contrast, the anticipation of the end of the world in 1666 AD. The locations of the journeys change rapidly in a rich scenery: a passage through the Alps, the Venice of the Jewish and Greek community, the Thessaloniki of Shabbetai Zvi, Padua and its famous university, Zante, the fall of Handak, the wondrous Constantinople, the London of new science, places in Germany, the Romanian lands of Orthodox rulers, the territory of Peter the Great with its steppes and overflowing rivers, and finally, a mountain they called Holy.
The novel recounts the life of a gifted man, a doctor and versatile thinker, who strides across countries, languages, cultures, wandering through people and ideas. A book about the history of medicine and Europe, a chronicle of the nostalgia for God and the meeting of religions, a pilgrimage into melancholy, in search of philosophical refuge in the other person and in his face.
