    One of the most beautiful books I have read in recent years. I read it in a few days and if I had more free time, I might have finished it sooner. It captivates you, it is easy to read, well-written, moving, and presents true events in a way that makes you experience them through the characters. Finishing the book, I was left with a sweet curiosity about how Niki's life unfolded. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Once upon a time, there lived a girl who, as a seventy-day-old infant, was arrested and sent into exile in the Cyclades. Once upon a time, there lived a girl whose family was torn apart during the Occupation and the Civil War, yet she never ceased to love any of them.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl whose father was "the heroic leader of the workers" when she was born and -when she grew up- became "the traitor of the working class." And even though he had betrayed nothing of what he believed.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl who spent her entire adolescence in deep illegality. Locked in a house, using a fake name, without going to school, without making friends. Because she knew that if the Authorities discovered who her parents were, they would execute them.

And when she returned to freedom, that girl fell hopelessly in love, against the will and tolerance of her family. The girl was named Niki. And she was my mother. (But that is the least significant part.)

Niki's life is the life of all children who come into the world with a heavy burden on their shoulders; they do not deny it, nor do they let it crush them. The people of "Niki" are the History of Greece in the 20th century.
