Description

The book you hold in your hands, dear reader, is the result of personal experiences, interviews, testimonies, publications, and released documents... It refers to the period of the EOKA struggle, up to the declaration of Cyprus's Independence in August 1960, and the dominant figure of this period, Archbishop Makarios.

Among other things, it examines:

  • The enigmatic death of his mother, his stay at the Kykkos Monastery as a monk child, his theological studies in Athens and Boston.
  • His elevation to Metropolitan of Kiti in 1948 and his election as Archbishop in 1950. The vows for Union and the change of direction. The negotiations with Harding. His exile in the Seychelles and the blackmail by Tornaritis.
  • The interview with Barbara Castle. His refusal to sign the Zurich-London Agreements and his sudden conversion on the evening of February 18, 1959.
  • The acceptance of the agreements by the leader of EOKA, Georgios Grivas-Digenis, and his secret departure. Makarios' election to the Presidency of the Republic.

The aim of the book is to present the truth about the role played by the protagonists of the events in Cyprus and Greece, as well as to highlight the circumstances that foreshadowed the unpleasant developments.

Because knowledge of the truth contributes to the unity of purpose and people, to drawing correct conclusions, and to avoiding mistakes in the future.
