Professor Ioannis Th. Maziotis has diligently engaged in two scientific fields, geopolitical science and political Islam, where his contribution has been decisive.
As a geographer and a practitioner of economic geography, he was the first to introduce systemic geopolitical analysis into the Greek academic reality, proposing, in international uniqueness, its methodological structuring according to the Lacatian scientific proposal.
He distinguished and epistemologically defined the concepts of geopolitics and geostrategy, highlighting the concept of interdisciplinarity in the scientific structure of geopolitical analysis and proposing the establishment of a 'Greek National Security Council' alongside its scientific counterparts.
He has been the initiator of this subject in all postgraduate schools of the Greek armed forces and security bodies, creating a school of geopolitical analysts with doctoral degrees both in Greece and abroad.
Simultaneously, he established and secured the corresponding terminology in additional scientific fields, particularly that of geopolitics.
Likewise, his contribution to the study of Islam has been crucial, where he specifically changed many issues related to the study of Islam in Greece – and not only – into various manifestations through his personal research example.
Specifically, we can identify thirteen volumes in his scientific work on Islam.
In particular: a) he examined Islam not in a sharply theological way but as a geopolitical phenomenon; b) he demonstrated the significance of Islam for understanding the contemporary world and as a tool of foreign policy; c) he referred to the Islamic basis of Turkey under the guise of pseudo-secularism; d) he distanced himself from the journalistic demonization of Islam; e) he challenged the insecure method of so-called social anthropologists; f) he was the first in Greece to resort to authentic Islamic sources; g) he examined complete primary institutions of Islam, such as Surah, etc.; h) he demonstrated the organizational connection between Freemasonry and Islamic mysticism, pointing out its use as a geopolitical factor; i) he exhibited the operational methods of the Islamic economy; j) he provided terminological clarification of Islamic terms and concepts; k) he clarified the jihad with the misleading image it had been assigned; l) he researched Islamic, Islamogenic, and Islamomorphic sects originatively, assigning them such tripartite classificatory characteristics; and m) he demonstrated the inseparable connection of political Islam with the Islamist movement.
