Description

As mentioned by a Latin author, the world is a stage, you came, you saw, you left. This aphorism captures a timeless reality. The similarities between human everyday life and theater are self-evident, as throughout our lives we are called upon to play roles, participate in groups, be an audience, congregation, or assembly. The church and every religious ceremony or worship systematize these elements, defining the processions and the recipients. There is the impression that the recipients are usually passive spectators who simply accept the messages of the sender. However, it seems that the nature of man itself rejects passivity. The approval of the messages of a speech should not be perceived as inaction. On the contrary, many times, it represents a coordinated dynamic positioning of the many in the opinion of the one. The same applies to the disapproval or rejection of the messages of the sender.

Byzantium, a society where virtuous and sinful, saints and witches, angels and devils swirled, obediently followed the theatrical order of the world, perhaps as few societies in history. Beyond God, the Byzantines worshipped ritual, performance, the very worship of God. By removing the awe from the spatial arrangement of the Christian temple, we have a theater, where the faithful, as a conscientious audience, had their own role, a role that they substantiated through a clear position that usually transformed into a reaction - positive or negative - towards what they received from the preachers. This is also the subject of this book.
