The Athenian playwright Aristophanes, in his comedy "The Wasps," performed on stage in 422 BC, satirizes the litigant mentality of the Athenians and the state of their courts. Of course, he does not question the judicial function. Instead, his goal is to restore the institution, which had evolved from a public oversight and justice mechanism into a pursuit driven by meager wages and an opportunity for some citizens’ vanity to be flattered.
At the same time, the poet criticizes how the powerful but unscrupulous demagogues exploited the judges — who drained the public treasury while most Athenians were starving — influencing them and often pushing them toward unjust decisions…
