Aristophanes in "The Wasps," performed on stage in 422 BC, satirizes the litigant nature of the Athenians and the state of their courts. Of course, he does not question the judicial function. On the contrary, his goal is to restore the institution, which had shifted from a function of public oversight and justice to a pursuit of meager wages and an opportunity for some citizens' vanity to be flattered.
At the same time, the poet criticizes how the powerful but irresponsible demagogues exploited the judges — draining the public treasury while most Athenians were starving — influencing them and often pushing them toward unjust decisions…
