Description & Specifications

2025 Prose Award to Sofia Nikolaidou for the book 'Our Own Children' from the Academy of Athens.

This is the story of Our Own Children, the children who grew up locked in their rooms. They listen to music with headphones, compose beats on the computer, and write bars in their notebooks. Their family is their friends, and they live their lives online.

This is the story of our generation, who believed we would become better than our parents. And now we see our children growing up, making their mistakes, moving forward. Voices and screams in the stadium, at the gate with the beasts. Blood on the sidewalks. Secret accounts on social media. Classmates who bite like vipers in schoolyards. Girls doing boyish things. Mothers who worry. Mothers who give up. Mothers with guts. Fathers who become mothers in tough times and fathers who are not okay. Two generations – and an abyss between them. Will the moment come when they reach out their hand?

This is a story about what we know, but also about what we will never learn. Because every generation thinks it protects its children. But if we listen to the story from the other side, we will see that children also protect their parents from what they will never suspect – and fortunately so. This is a story about a rap band, about dreams that take revenge, about the children saved by music.

Excerpt from the book

Those were the days when he was in a gentle flight, walking a few centimeters above the ground, images on the street passing through him like a current. He felt as if he had no skin. The rhymes hovered, resembling cut wires on an electricity pole, sparking. And he waited until he could no longer bear it, until whatever was boiling inside him finally blew the lid off. Only then did he open his notebook. The words slipped, and Kostis surfed their rhythm. The first verse was always his board, guiding him. He liked everything and then everything smelled bad to him, he wrote, erased, returned to the erased lines, the second time more certain that they were to be thrown away.

That's why I don't play with my words, my dear. What you hear is my life. Bloody Hawk

AND IF YOU GET SCARED, IT'S THE FIRST TIME YOU GET USED TO IT A LITTLE LATER DUTH The notification on her phone woke her up. Valia turned on the bedside lamp; the morning presbyopia would gradually subside, but now she saw everything blurry. She half-closed her eyes and looked at the screen. Even if you want to forget, the phone is there, reminding you of everything. A selfie they had taken on vacation, back when Kostis was still in elementary school. Her head leaned tenderly against his, the sea sparkled behind them, the sun hit her eyes. Kostis was turned in profile, looking at her with adoration. He puckered his lips and squeezed her cheeks. July 2014, vacation in Toroni. Ten whole years ago, she didn’t even remember how they passed. Carefree times; she was happy but didn’t know it. Back then she thought she had problems. Stress with work, money troubles, fears for the child. Small worries, like mosquito bites. It was the time when she looked at herself in the mirror and still liked what she saw. The wrinkles weren’t deep and the body was obedient.

The small betrayals of her new self hadn’t started yet, the joint pains, the slight swelling under the eyes, the feeling that life was ending and she had to catch up, she wasn’t sure with what. For a while now, she had started noticing the elderly on the street, those whom Kostis called old men. Their helplessness tore her heart apart, especially when she saw them dragging shopping bags and afraid to cross the traffic light. In moments like these, she always remembered the terror in Kostis’s eyes. He had returned from kindergarten, looked at her with wide-open eyes, and informed her of the most important thing in the world. – Grandpa will die. Old people die, did you know that? And when Valia didn’t answer, he insisted. – Will you die too? Answers are banana peels, especially when you have someone like Kostis in front of you. But psychologists said we should answer children. Every answer brought a new question, and it never ended.
