Many things separated Camus from Seferis: the places, the social class, the temperament, the relationship with politics, the ways of writing... However, deep in their souls resided something that connected them: the light of the Mediterranean and a certain idea of Greece.
These laid the foundation for a silent yet fascinating dialogue and a way of life towards the essential: the rejection of fanaticism; the respect for boundaries; the duty of the "self" towards the "us" of the city; the solidarity of the artist with the community of the living and the dead that is culture; the dedication to the specific person with their virtues and sins; the tireless struggle for the transcendence of nihilism.
It is significant that this stance was shaped, for both, in the tragedy of a century that gave birth to the horrors of two world wars, the Holocaust, and Hiroshima.
And here it is: at the start of a new millennium, our world reveals its tragic face once again, awakening the nightmares of intolerance, displacement, and war, while simultaneously experiencing a multifaceted crisis without precedent: ecological, geopolitical, social, moral, cultural, and a crisis of humanity.
Thus, the dialogue of yesterday between the two creators proves to be not merely relevant but prophetic. We need to remember it and renew it daily. From its vibrancy will be determined whether our humanity can be preserved.
