In 1890, Lefkadio Hearn wrote:
"What I love about Japan are the Japanese - the poor, simple people of this country. They are divine. There is nothing in this world that approaches their unadulterated natural grace. No book written so far has reflected it. And I love their gods, their customs, their garments, their melodious and trembling songs, their houses, their superstitions, their flaws.
And I believe that their art is so much more advanced than ours, as ancient Greek art was superior to the early artistic carvings of Europe - I believe there is more art in a print by Hokusai or his successors than in a painting worth ten thousand dollars - no, in a painting worth a hundred thousand dollars. We are the barbarians! I do not merely think these things: I am dead certain of them. I only wish I could be reincarnated as a baby from Japan, so I could see and feel the world as beautifully as the Japanese brain can."
