Description

Sociology is academically a neglected science in Greece or, rather, underestimated and recently... abolished. Our book Sociology of Technology and Urban Culture aims to rekindle interest in Sociology and the Social Sciences and to reveal that older sociological thought gains new significance when related to the technological phenomenon.

For instance, we examine Thorstein Veblen as a sociology of technology par excellence, since technology constitutes the central, if not determining, variable in his sociological thought. He explores the social nature of technology, technological development, and its relationship with social change, as well as the diffusion and reception of technical innovation. Broadly, this spectrum narratively traverses our book.

The book Sociology of Technology and Urban Culture seeks to renew interest in Sociology and the Social Sciences, while also emphasizing their importance for the Technical University as essential components in the engineering profession.

It summarizes the tools of social science, the significant achievement of Critical Theory, does not overlook feminist critique and feminist theories of communication, Habermas's theory of communicative action, Gadamer's interpretive theory, and Foucault's critique of power. We navigate Taylorism and Fordism interlinking them with industrial development, production design, control, and power.

We present the Studies of Science and Technology (SST), the concept of innovation, the techno-social system or network, and the hybrids of machines and humans, cyborgs, highlighting consumption in general as a phenomenon of material culture and various technologies as consumer products, as well as modern science as a quasi-good of consumption.

A special place in our book is occupied by the chapter on mobilities, as the concept redefines space and time, identities, and technology itself in relation to our society and as a topic represents a significant contribution to the Greek literature.
